Handball rule from the Premier Legaue's own website

Deflections
Premier League players will be allowed extra leeway when it comes to ricocheted handballs.
It is often impossible to avoid contact with the ball if it has deflected off the body of an opponent, team-mate, or even another part of the own player.
So a handball will not be awarded if the ball touches a players hand/arm directly from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player who is close/nearby.

I agree with Sven R. At the moment, the law seems unfair. If it strikes a defender on the arm, he is not penalised, but if it strikes an attacking player, they are penalised.

The penalising of accidental handball only happens when it is in the build up to or scoring of a goal I imagine the original intention was to rule out goals where the ball went in off an accidental hand or it meant the ball fell straight to the attacker who scored. As people have said I donât imagine it was ever meant to stop goals like the one Snodgrass scored but I imagine the law was NEVER trialled in matches. Reckon it will change to something like that next season.

Letâs change the scenario slightly & if theirs someone brushed up on handball regarding the below scenario could you please enlighten me.
Say Rice & centre half are chasing the ball, but Rice instead headers it onto the centre halfs arm from 2 yards who in turn controls it (accidentally) and enables him to pass back to keeper who then launches the ball up field to safety.
Want then happens? Does var then rewind, establishes itâs accidental but none the less an handball that the defender gained advantage with. Would the ref then have to give a red against the last man?

If the Sheff Utd player instead of heading it onto Rices arm had accidentally knocked it with his hand onto the arm I presume the goal would still be disallowed. With no free kick against the defender

As said before, one problem is defining if a goal comes âdirectlyâ from a handball. It hit Riceâs hand, he ran for about 25 yards and just about got it away from the defender to Snodgrass. As he had the assist it was defined as directly from the handball.
The other week, Liverpool scores after VVD appeared to handball it, then booted it forward 60 yards for Firmino to score. Apparently, because it was followed by a long ball, itâs not considered direct despite the fact that long ball was the assist.

If the ball hits a hand itâs handball, none of this interpreting if itâs accidental or not. The fact is if the ball didnât hit Riceâs hand we donât score the goal as he loses the ball.
Rule has to be black and white with none of the endless arguing if itâs accidental or not. Same as pens for handball, if it hits a hand itâs a penalty, intended or not.
Same rule for everyone
The added advantage is the cunt pundits become redundant for handball decisions and we donât have to listen to all their opinions

According their own rules, it shouldnât have been disallowed. Iâm not a fan of the new rule and it should be changed but so much happened after that ball hit the arm that it canât legitimately be said to have played a role in creating the goal. To stretch the causal chain back that far is ridiculous and I believe that is why other goals werenât given in similar circumstances this season. This was primarily the fault of the VAR official guided by a poor interpretation of an already poor rule.

We've had more VAR decisions go against us than any other team.
Now I'm sure there was a star from last season that we had the most wrong decisions against us that VAR would overturn in our favour.
Let's be honest who didn't see this coming.
So for the first time ever these things were actually evening out if not for VAR

To be fair wansteadman, that is their job. They have to look at every goal to see if there are any reasons to disallow it. They don't just wait to see if anyone moans about it.
As already said, problem here is the way this new handball rule has been interpreted. A brush against the hand in an early phase of attacking play is not the same as scoring or creating a goal by use of the hand.

The thing that annoyed me most was the fact that the sheff Utd players werenât appealing for anything so the blokes at var in their little room must have gone over it looking for a reason to disallow it

It was not created with an arm, it was created by Riceâs boot!

Thing is, even the statement of âscores or createdâ is dubious - rice didnât create the goal with his arm, he ran 30 yards after that happened and played a through ball
When they announced this at the start of the season I assumed it meant if the ball was deflected into the path of a player by the arm or the ball was blocks by a players arm and they then passed it straight away to the scorer
Itâs just utter shite

Let's be clear, the rule is shit.
And it won't last.
What's the betting that we suffer from it more than any other top flight side, before it's dumped as not fit for purpose?
We've already got a head start.

I'm amazed at how many people reference this page and quote the paragraph on deflections, when presumably they would have read the very first line under the heading "Handball":
"Any goal scored or created with the use of the hand or arm will be disallowed this season even if it is accidental."
You can argue that the law is shit but it is the law and everyone knows it is the law. If you're an attacking player and you know the ball has hit your arm in the build up to a goal, you might as well not celebrate.
Personally I'd prefer for the law to be tweaked so that handball is given if a clear and obvious advantage is gained, even if unintended. That would prevent goals from being disallowed for an innocuous brush of the arm, however it would still rule out Rice's goal on Friday night as he gained a very clear and obvious advantage from it.
